In Praise of Reno 911!
I did it! After a friend’s recommendation, I started Reno 911! from the beginning. I didn’t exactly need to take on another TV-related project right now, but “Why not?” was my first reaction. It turned out to be an awesome idea. I watched two episodes a day for the past six weeks. (Thank you, Comedy Central and CBS All Access!)
The show is about a group of clueless police officers working in “The Biggest Little City in the World.” It is a mockumentary-style, sketch-comedy take on Cops. The verdict: Hell yes. It’s laugh-out-loud funny and boasts a brilliant cast (more on that in a bit). Created by Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney and Thomas Lennon, it ran for six seasons from 2003-2009. I didn’t catch it when it first aired on Comedy Central, but I definitely knew of it. I had seen pictures and ads featuring Lt. Jim Dangle (Lennon) wearing those tight shorts over the years. But check out the cast’s stacked lineup:
- Cedric Yarbrough (Deputy S. Jones) – wonderful on Speechless, ABC’s short-lived comedy.
- Wendi McLendon-Covey (Deputy Clementine Johnson) – the matriarch on ABC’s The Goldbergs and a key role on Bridesmaids.
- Niecy Nash (Deputy Raineesha Williams) – Claws, Getting On, When They See Us, Never Have I Ever, Mrs. America … amazing.
- Joe Lo Truglio (Deputy Frank Rizzo) – Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX/NBC). Say no more!
- By the way, 2020 Emmy nominee Kenney (Deputy Trudy Weigel) is Jerusha on NBC’s Superstore.
The emsemble’s other main players — Garant, Lennon, Mary Birdsong and Carlos Alazraqui — are just as good. Their chemistry is through the roof. Recurring characters who made me chuckle on a regular basis: Terry Bernadino (played by Nick Swardson), Principal Manderville (Kristina Hayes) and Frisbee (Zach Galifianakis). Performances from Matt Walsh, Rachael Harris, Jim Rash and Patton Oswalt are deserving of kudos as well.
All of this means I have to watch Reno 911! Miami this weekend. (The 2007 film is streaming on the STARZ app). Then, I’ll subscribe to Quibi to devour the current batch of episodes. Unsurprisingly, critical reaction has been very positive.
