2020 Emmy Nominations: My Initial Reactions – More Categories (Final Post)

Shocked to see Kimmel nominated. Shocked, I say. (He’s the host of the September’s main ceremony.) My favorites are Trevor’s show and Sam’s show. I would have included Desus & Mero over The Late Show. The favorite: Last Week Tonight.

Big, big fan of the work of The Daily Show, Full Frontal and Last Week Tonight. The favorite: Last Week Tonight, with Trevor Noah’s crew coming on strong.

Directing (series): A Black Lady Sketch Show, Born At Night, But Not Last Night, Dime Davis; The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Dr. Fauci Answers Trevor’s Questions About Coronavirus, Paul Meyer; Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Episode 629, Paul Pennolino and Christopher Werner; The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Live Show, Jim Hoskinson; Saturday Night Live, Host: Eddie Murphy, Don Roy King; Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready, Linda Mendoza.

Pennolino and Werner all day long. The favorite: Pennolino and Werner. Or maybe, just maybe, Meyer.

COMPETITION

Series: The Masked Singer; Nailed It!; RuPaul’s Drag Race; Top Chef; The Voice.

Why does The Voice always get in over American Idol? Probably because it’s better produced. The judges and talent on Idol are superior, though. Top Chef is rather enjoyable, too. I do not like The Masked Singer and have never seen Nailed It! Sorry. The favorite: RuPaul’s Drag Race.

REALITY/COMPETITION

Host: Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Nes, Queer Eye; Nicole Byer, Nailed It!; Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Robert Herjavec, Kevin O’Leary, Shark Tank; Padma Lakshmi & Tom Colicchio, Top Chef; Amy Poehler & Nick Offerman, Making It; RuPaul Charles, RuPaul’s Drag Race.

A truly stellar group of hosts. Yay for the pairs from Making It and Top Chef. Surprised to not see Lynch, Probst or Seacrest. The favorite: The guys from Queer Eye.

SKETCH

Series: A Black Lady Sketch Show; Drunk History; Saturday Night Live.

Just three shows nominated. Thought there’d be four (At Home with Amy Sedaris). That’s tough. The favorite: SNL. But watch out for A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Guest Actress: Angela Bassett (A Black Lady Sketch Show), Bette Midler (The Politician), Maya Rudolph (The Good Place), Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), Wanda Sykes (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Saturday Night Live).

Awesome to Bassett here as well as Rudolph as a double-nominee. Sykes is incredible, too. I didn’t really like Midler or PWB, but they’re big names. Very upset there’s no Valerie Mahafee (Dead To Me) or Vanessa Bayer. The favorite: Rudolph. Take your pick.

Guest Actor: Adam Driver (Saturday Night Live), Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Eddie Murphy (Saturday Night Live), Dev Patel (Modern Love), Brad Pitt (Saturday Night Live), Fred Willard (Modern Family).

SNL gets three noms here. Of course. Of them, my pick would be Driver. Dev Patel comes out of nowhere to snag a bid. And I thought RuPaul, Larry David or someone else from Curb would get recognized. The favorite: The late Willard.

Episodic Writing: The Good Place, Whenever You’re Ready, Michael Schur; The Great, The Great, Tony McNamara; Schitt’s Creek, Happy Ending, Daniel Levy; Schitt’s Creek, The Presidential Suite, David West Read; What We Do In The Shadows, Collaboration, Sam Johnson and Chris Marcil; What We Do In The Shadows, Ghosts, Paul Simms; What We Do In The Shadows, On The Run, Stefani Robinson.

Something I have to do ASAP: watch Shadows. I have heard great things, but it slipped through the cracks. I am pulling for both Schitt’s Creek episodes and Schur’s series finale script.

Episodic Directing: The Great, The Great (Pilot), Matt Shakman; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, It’s Comedy Or Cabbage, Amy Sherman-Palladino; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Marvelous Radio, Daniel Palladino; Modern Family, Finale Part, Gail Mancuso; Ramy, Miakhalifa.mov, Ramy Youssef; Schitt’s Creek, Happy Ending, Andrew Cividino and Daniel Levy; Will & Grace, We Love Lucy, James Burrow.

The Palladinos and Mancuso are legends at this point. But my heart is with Levy/Cividino and Youssef. The favorite: Levy.

DRAMA SERIES

Guest Actress: Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid’s Tale), Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black), Cherry Jones (Succession), Phylicia Rashad (This Is Us), Cicely Tyson (How To Get Away With Murder), Harriet Walter (Succession).

Bledel has won here before, so you have to consider her as a possibility. Cox and Rashad, too. I loved what Jones delivered in Defending Jacob. The favorite: Tyson.

Guest Actor: Jason Bateman (The Outsider), Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us), James Cromwell (Succession), Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian), Andrew Scott (Black Mirror), Martin Short (The Morning Show).

A great group. I think Jones (a past winner) and Scott are going to make late runs. Short is a legit contender. The favorite: Bateman.

Episodic Writing: Better Call Saul, Bad Choice Road, Thomas Schnauz; Better Call Saul, Bagman, Gordon Smit; The Crown, Aberfan, Peter Morgan; Ozark, All In, Chris Mundy; Ozark, Boss Fight, John Shiban, Written by; Ozark, Fire Pink, Miki Johnson; Succession, This Is Not For Tears, Jesse Armstrong.

Again, in the back: No representation for Pose? Terrible. Three episodes of Ozark is just stupid. I’m pulling for Armstrong. The favorite: Armstrong.

Episodic Directing: The Crown, Aberfan, Benjamin Caro; The Crown, Cri de Coeur, Jessica Hobbs; Homeland, Prisoners Of War, Lesli Linka Glatter; The Morning Show, The Interview, Mimi Leder; Ozark, Fire Pink, Alik Sakharov; Ozark, Su Casa Es Mi Casa, Ben Semanoff; Succession, Hunting, Andrij Parekh; Succession, This Is Not For Tears, Mark Mylod.

The absence of any Pose episodes is glaring. But the episodes from The Crown, The Morning Show and Succession are so good. The favorite: Andrij Parekh.

LIMITED SERIES

Episodic Writing: Mrs. America, Shirley, Tanya Barfield; Normal People, Episode 3, Sally Rooney and Alice Birch; Unbelievable, Episode 1, Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman; Unorthodox, Part 1, Anna Winger; Watchmen, This Extraordinary Being, Damon Lindelof and Cord Jefferson.

I want Barfield to win for her brilliant script. And Unbelievable holds a special place in my heart, too. The favorite: Lindelof and Jefferson.

Episodic Directing: Little Fires Everywhere, Find A Way, Lynn Shelton; Normal People, Episode 5, Lenny Abrahamson; Unorthodox, Maria Schrader; Watchmen, It’s Summer And We’re Running Out Of Ice, Nicole Kasse; Watchmen, Little Fear Of Lightning, Steph Green; Watchmen, This Extraordinary Being, Stephen Williams.

I can absolutely see the late Lynn Shelton winning, and that would make me a happy man. Schrader’s work is excellent as well. The favorite: Take your pick from the three Watchmen episodes.

COMEDY SERIES

Lead Actress: Christina Applegate (Dead To Me), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Linda Cardellini (Dead To Me), Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Issa Rae (Insecure), Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish).

The best news of the day is this category including both leading women from Dead To Me AND Issa Rae. I also adore Tracee Ellis Ross, so this is wonderful. Pamela Adlon, Aidy Bryant and Jane Levy deserve to be here. The favorite: Brosnahan or O’Hara.

Lead Actor: Anthony Anderson (black-ish), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Ted Danson (The Good Place), Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek), Ramy Youssef (Ramy).

Ramy!!! I did not dig Black Monday this year, so I would have put Rob McElhenney in instead. And no Larry David? That’s a shock. The favorite: Levy. But watch out for Youssef.

Supporting Actress: Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Marin Hinkle (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), ]Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek), Yvonne Orji (Insecure), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live).

This is the BEST group. I’m thrilled for Carden, Gilpin, Murphy and Strong (my favorite part of the SNL cast). And Orji! She’s wonderful. The favorite: Borstein. Again.

Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali (Ramy), Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method), Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Sterling K. Brown (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), William Jackson Harper (The Good Place), Daniel Levy (Schitt’s Creek), Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live).

Dan Levy is amazing, and I’m glad he’s in the mix. He’s got a lot of competition from heavyweights like Ali, Arki, Brown and Shalhoub. Harper and Thompson are very deserving. Sad not to see Noah Reid’s name for Schitt’s Creek. The favorite: Ali.

DRAMA SERIES

Lead Actress: Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Laura Linney (Ozark), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Zendaya (Euphoria).

Zendaya!!! Thrilled for Aniston. Expected the rest, but could have replaced the Killing Eve women with Viola Davis and Mj Rodriguez. It’s a shame. The favorite: Colman.

Lead Actor: Jason Bateman (Ozark), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us), Steve Carell (The Morning Show), Brian Cox (Succession), Billy Porter (Pose), Jeremy Strong (Succession).

The omission of Bob Odenkirk for Better Call Saul is awful, maybe the biggest of the day. Very happy for Strong. Not surprised by everyone else. The favorite: Bateman or Cox.

Supporting Actress: Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies), Julia Garner (Ozark), Thandie Newton (Westworld), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), Sarah Snook (Succession), Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies), Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale).

Voters couldn’t ignore Dern and Streep. I probably would have. No one from Orange Is The New Black or Pose. What does Rhea Seehorn have to do get some respect?? Just ridiculous. Carter and Shaw are great, and Newton and Garner won here recently. Love, love, love Snook and Wiley getting nods. The favorite: Dern.

Supporting Actor: Nicholas Braun (Succession), Billy Crudup (The Morning Show), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Mark Duplass (The Morning Show), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale), Jeffrey Wright (Westworld).

Lots of kudos for Succession — Braun! — and The Morning Show. Can’t argue with that. Good for Esposito, too. Where are the Pose boys or Josh O’Connor (The Crown)? The favorite: Crudup.

LIMITED SERIES/TV MOVIE

Lead Actress: Cate Blanchett (Mrs. America), Shira Haas (Unorthodox), Regina King (Watchmen), Octavia Spencer (Self Made: Inspired By The Life Of Madam C.J. Walker), Kerry Washington (Little Fires Everywhere).

Where are Dever or Wever??? Very surprised, especially with Spencer getting in. Haas is exceptional in the Netflix series. Ditto for Witherspoon, Kazan and Mueller. The other nominees are huge stars. The favorite: Blanchett. King and Washington are strong contenders.

Lead Actor: Jeremy Irons (Watchmen), Hugh Jackman (Bad Education), Paul Mescal (Normal People ), Jeremy Pope (Hollywood), Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much Is True).

Congrats to Jeremy Pope! While I didn’t like Normal People, Mescal is very good. Same goes for Ruffalo. The favorite: Jackman.

Supporting Actress: Uzo Aduba (Mrs. America), Toni Collette (Unbelievable), Margo Martindale (Mrs. America), Jean Smart (Watchmen), Holland Taylor (Hollywood), Tracey Ullman (Mrs. America).

How do you choose one woman here?  Aduba, Collette and Smart are fantastic. Martindale and Taylor have won Emmys. Ullman plays one of the best characters in Mrs. America. No Cherry Jones, Rose Byrne or Allison Janney? Wow. The favorite: Collette.

Supporting Actor: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend), Louis Gossett Jr. (Watchmen), Dylan McDermott (Hollywood), Jim Parsons (Hollywood).

The men from Watchmen dominate here. Good. McDermott and Parsons are worthy, too. The biggest whiffs? Romano (Bad Education), Simmons (Defending Jacob) and Slattery (Mrs. America). The favorite: Parsons.

The nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning. One big takeaway in the big four: No Pose. But a Drama Series nomination for The Mandalorian? Ugh. My category-by-category thoughts:

Comedy Series: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dead To Me, The Good Place, Insecure, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Schitt’s Creek, What We Do In The Shadows.

VERY happy seeing noms for Dead To Me, Insecure and Schitt’s Creek. Not surprised at all about the rest, except for maybe Shadows. Would have loved to have seen bids for Never Have I Ever, Ramy, Sex Education or Superstore. The favorite: Schitt’s Creek.

Drama Series: Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, Killing Eve, The Mandalorian, Ozark, Stranger Things, Succession.

Where is Pose?! So devastated. Especially when The Mandalorian and Killing Eve get in. Surprised about the This Is Us snub. Would have loved to see recognition for David Makes Man, Euphoria, The Morning Show and Orange Is The New Black. The favorite: Succession.

Limited Series: Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs. America, Unbelievable, Unorthodox, Watchmen.

What a strong lineup. Can’t argue with anything. Surprised by Unorthodox’s inclusion because I thought The Plot Against America would take its spot. No Defending Jacob, Hollywood, The Loudest Voice or Normal People. The favorite: Watchmen.

TV Movie: American Son, Bad Education, Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Old Bones, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend.

Great news for American Son. Snubs for Patsy and Loretta and The Clark Sisters — somewhat surprising. Unbreakable‘s star power was enough to get a nom. This still comes down to Bad Education (the favorite) and El Camino.

2020 Emmy Nominations: My Bold Predictions

The nominations for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced tomorrow (July 28). The presentation will be streamed live at Emmys.com, starting at 11:30 a.m. ET.

An awards show about the best in TV is pretty much my Super Bowl. I love the predictions, the campaigns and the event itself. The show will air in some form (most likely virtually) on Sept. 20 on ABC. That’s less than two months away. Who’s ready?!

I posted my complete predictions over at Gold Derby. I also went through the contenders for each category over the last month on Twitter (@jasondlangbehn). Here are my bold predictions:
